501.10 Truancy

Students are required to be in attendance, pursuant to board policy, for ninety percent of days per term, per school year. Parents are expected to telephone the school office to report a student’s absence prior to start of school on the day of the absence, or send a note or other documentation of the reason for the absence so that building administration can determine if they are excused absences. Parents of students covered by Iowa’s Compulsory Attendance law may be required to provide doctors’ notes or other legal documentation of the need for absences that accumulate to more than six days per term. Truants under this policy (and Iowa’s Compulsory Attendance law) may be referred to the County Attorney’s Office for legal action by the Superintendent or his designees.
