Dear Lewis Central Colleagues, Students, Families and Community Members;

There are few things that are certain in life, but one constant for me has always been the inspiration and the hope I have found in advocating for students and educators. I have enjoyed always looking for the right words and actions to make a meaningful difference, and to focus on the good while choosing to see the blue skies in every situation. I have been blessed with opportunities to be surrounded by people who permit me to lead and who understand the level of grace and flexibility required to approach every day of our work with positive intent. Through this understanding, I find it entirely possible to appreciate how every single experience, good or otherwise, always contributes to a very rewarding conclusion.

I am so thankful for my countless experiences over the years as an educator, and I cannot adequately express how much I enjoy being a part of LC. As I have navigated each year of my career, I have learned that even with precise planning and meaningful intention, change remains yet another constant factor in our lives. Circumstances primarily regarding my family have resulted in contemplations of a closure to my superintendent career. As a reflective and passionate person, this is far from easy, but I have concluded that the time for this decision is now. Therefore, earlier this week, I informed the LC Board of my intent to retire at the end of this school year.

I have enjoyed every one of my 34 years, and my final three with LC will always be special to me. I am sure there will be much unnecessary speculation over my decision, but I kindly ask everyone to trust what I have stated in this communication regarding my reasoning. While there have most certainly been some challenging circumstances to tackle these last few years, I have never shied away from challenges. In fact, it has always been the challenges that attract me to this work while pushing me to be a better leader. Regardless, I believe family must always be a priority.

I have great admiration for the LC students, staff, community members, friends and our Board of Education, who have all given me the opportunity to serve, and I'll look forward to every single day we have together between now and June 30, 2022. There is good work to continue, and I will not diminish my efforts or my passion for helping others thrive at any point prior to my departure. Making an announcement at this time is important, as our Board of Education will immediately begin an organized search effort to find my successor.

This decision has been highly emotional for me, but I intend to spend the rest of this school year finding every opportunity to smile with all of you. Your encouragement and your support will be more than welcomed, and absolutely needed, as I prepare for this transition. Thank you and please know, I greatly appreciate all of you.

Very Sincerely, DK
