Kreft Primary has a new handwriting champion! Abbie Heiser, a first grade student in Mrs. Pregon's room, submitted the winning entry in the 19th annual  Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest. All those that chose to participate from Kreft received a certificate and a special pencil. The purpose of the contest is to encourage legible handwriting. Students had to write their full names and then copy these sentences: I like to write letters to my friends. I always use my best manuscript writing. Then they had to explain why legible handwriting is important. Abbie said she thought it was important so that other people could understand her thoughts and creations. Mrs. Pregon commented that Abbie uses her best handwriting in all of her work. Abbie's  entry was sent on to the state competition, and was recently informed that she is Iowa's best handwriter in the first and second grade division. As a state winner, Abbie will receive a $250 prize pack for her school and will be eligible to win as much as $3,000 in cash and prizes to be shared with her school. Her entry has now been sent on to the national competition where it will be judged against those of other state winners from across the country for the honor of being named grand National Champion. "Handwriting is a core academic skill and a core life skill that improves academic performance and boosts self esteem," said Zaner-Bloser president, Bob Page. Abbie will be presented a plaque from the Zaner-Bloser company at a ceremony in early May.
