Superintendent's January 2010 Update

by Mark Schweer

January 19, 2010

Happy New Year!

I don't know about you but I've had my fill of winter already.  The reason for the lateness of my article was because the administration made some calendar adjustment recommendations to the Board and we only had 1 regularly scheduled meeting this month (18th).   The ending date for the 2nd trimester has been moved to March 9.  Even though (hopefully not), we may miss additional days of school due to inclement weather, the ending date for the 2nd trimester will remain March 9th.   The district teacher work day scheduled for February 26 (a no school day for students) will remain that way.  The 3rd trimester will start on March 10.

The snow make up day on February 15 will be a school day as previously announced.  The other make up days have been added to the end of the year with last day of classes now scheduled for Friday, June 4.  The administration also looked at where we might re-capture days in the current calendar.  There really aren’t many options.  What we did propose to the board was that if between now and say March 15 and we have only missed 1 additional day, we would have school for students on Monday, April 5 so that the last day of classes would remain on that Friday (June 4) rather than have students come back for classes on that Monday, June 7.  However, if we miss more than 1 day between now and say March 15, then we will still have April 5 as a non-school day.  We are sharing this with people now so that they have advance notice that having school on April 5 is a possibility.

You have undoubtedly read or heard about the fact that Lewis Central Middle School has been identified as one of the 35 "persistently lowest achieving" school buildings in the state.  We are taking this very recently determined label very seriously.  Mr. Dunphy, the Middle School Principal, has written an article discussing this which I would encourage you to read.  His article can be found on the Middle School webpage by clicking here..

I would like to encourage you to nominate an outstanding educator for the H.H. "Red" and Ruth H. Nelson Excellence in Teaching Award.  This is a wonderful way to say "thank you" to someone who has made a difference in your life or the life of a child about whom you care.  Please visit the school’s website at www.lewiscentral.org to see how you can nominate an outstanding educator.  The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 26.  Nominations must be made on-line.  Past LC recipients were Linda Hahn, John Drake, and Clay Cunningham.
