Club
Several summers ago, Clay Cunningham directed a summer
project with the help of eight adult community potters and ten HS
students. The end result was the construction of a Wood Kiln with
all material purchased or donated by local vendors, with the
exception of the brick. This group stacked over 3,000 high
temperature bricks to create the floor, walls, and chimney. It
takes two days to stoke the kiln with wood until is reaches the
desired temperature, and three days to cool down. Because of the
laborious and time-consuming nature of the firing process, the kiln
is only fired twice a year – over Thanksgiving break and during the
Summer Workshop in June. The pots in the kiln are not decorated
with glaze, rather they are blushed with color from the flame and
ash, resulting in each one-of-a-kind piece. Over 400 pieces can be
fired at a time. This year New York artist Hong Ling Wee joined the
group and demonstrated how she builds her large sculptures. The
Pottery Club is underway and working on a large body of pots to
fill the kiln at Thanksgiving. Mr. Cunningham invites you to stop
by the kiln at the HS between Thanksgiving leftovers and see what
his club is doing. You can purchase a unique piece of pottery at
the Fall Craft Fair.
