Change for Haiti

Kreft students changed lives by bringing their change to school. This fundraiser, spearheaded by Kreft teacher, Alison Toman, took place the entire month of March. The $1413 raised went to the American Red Cross for relief in Haiti. Michelle Bose from the Red Cross spoke with the Kreft students recently. She talked about what an earthquake is, and all of the things the Red Cross is doing to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. The money the students raised will be used for food, water, and first aid supplies. For every one hundred pennies the students brought in, one vaccination can be provided, and $10 will cover the cost of a mosquito net. Mrs. Toman observed, "This is a great way for our students to use the lifeskill of caring. Students have heard about the earthquake in the news and are concerned about what is happening." She and Mrs. Sutherland both remarked that this activity has been a great springboard to the kindergarten science unit on weather. It has sparked a lot of discussion about how weather affects our daily lives. Changing weather, changing lives, bringing in change. Big changes can be brought about by a little spare change!
