Superintendent's March 2010 Update
by Mark Schweer
March 03, 2010
Although, temperatures are not as warm as normal for this time of the year yet, I have my hopes up that spring is just around the corner. After all, the 1st day of spring is just a few weeks away.
On January 25 and March 1 our teachers were learning about the statewide mandated Iowa Core Curriculum. It is a state level effort to improve teaching and learning, ensuring that all Iowa students engage in rigorous and relevant experiences in our schools. This is what Lewis Central has and will continue to be about – excellence in education. The Iowa Core defines the most critical learning for all students across the state.
Our District Leadership Team comprised of K-12 teachers and administrators has been involved in leadership training for the past 2 years. This team will be integral in leading our teachers through the vast amount of information to take in, make sense of, and incorporate into our classrooms. This effort is a joint venture of teachers, administrators, Area Education Agency support and state guidance from the Iowa Department of Education. Stay tuned for additional information over the coming months as our district continues to explore, becomes knowledgeable, and begins to implement the Iowa Core Curriculum into every classroom for all students. The Iowa Department of Education also has a website where the public can access the content piece of the Iowa Core Curriculum: www.corecurriculum.iowa.gov.
The school calendar for next year will be discussed at the March 15 Board Meeting. When approved, the calendar will be posted on the district website.
