Superintendent's April 2009 Update

by Mark Schweer

April 01, 2009

Last month I suggested that spring was surely just around the corner as I had seen several robins in my backyard. Well, yesterday I saw those same robins huddled together shivering trying to keep warm amidst the snow flurries.

Foundation Luncheon
The 9th Annual Lewis Central Foundation Scholarship Luncheon/Brunch will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the High School Commons Area. Each table is decorated with a theme and serves brunch for 8 people at $10 per plate. Anyone interested in decorating a table or who would like to attend and enjoy the activities at one of our tables, please contact Jennifer Clayton at 712-566-9551 (home) or 712-328-0305 (work). The friends and patrons of the Lewis Central School District have a long history of providing strong educational opportunities to our students. With that history, the formation of the Lewis Central Foundation began. A part of what the Foundation is about is raising scholarship funds for graduating seniors. The Spring Lewis Central Foundation Brunch is one avenue that is used to help this effort.

Iowa Core Curriculum
Perhaps you have read or heard about the “Iowa Core Curriculum”. The Iowa Core Curriculum identifies essential concepts and skills for kindergarten through 12th grade in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and 21st century skills. It also includes direction for teachers regarding effective instruction and assessment. In a nutshell, the Iowa Core Curriculum is a state-wide effort to improve teaching and learning to ensure that all Iowa students engage in a rigorous and relevant curriculum. The 2008 legislative session, through Senate File 2216, requires all school districts and accredited nonpublic schools to implement the Iowa Core Curriculum (July 1, 2012 for grades 9 – 12 and 2014-15 for kindergarten through 8th grade). This year our District Leadership Team has attended several leadership training sessions facilitated by the Iowa Department of Education. We have made a decision as a district that we are going to implement a K-12 plan rather than an individual high school plan and then an elementary plan.
