Service a Big Part of Student Council Agenda
Titan Hill Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Coming Soon!
by Kris York
November 13, 2008
Every year the student council chooses service opportunities to sponsor, and this year is no different. This fall representatives learned about Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, then decided to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with a Kids Walk.
Kick-off for the event was on Nov. 11, and included education for all students about diabetes, JDRF's mission to find a cure, and how to help. You no doubt recognize their familiar paper "sneaker" that is used in collecting donations. Titan Hill students each received 10 of these sneakers to sell for any amount starting at $1. (If you're approached to buy one, we hope you'll say yes!) Those sneakers will bear the names of the student seller and the buyer's names, and will be posted inside the school. The selling/collecting concludes on the day of our walk - November 26.
Representatives did much of the planning, including the route and some incentives to sell. Our plan (weather permitting, of course) is to walk from our school to the trail that leads to the middle school and track. We'll walk a lap of the track, then head back to school. In order to make this route safe, we have a highway patrolman ready to assist with highway crossing. We're also inviting parents to join in the walk.
We hope to raise $10,000! Some incentives include a chance to go out to lunch with Mr. Stopak (top seller of each grade), game time for the top selling grade level, popcorn and movie at school for those raising at least $100, and photos posted at school of all students selling all 10 of their sneakers (they can also request more)!
We have found our community to be most generous when the students embark on these projects, so we expect that this will be another successful event. Thank--you!
