Superintendent's September 2008 Update

by Mark Schweer

September 03, 2008

Well, we are off and running with another school year.  Thanks to the efforts of Construct, Inc., Jeff Carper (Director of Operations), and our wonderful custodial crew, Phase 1 of the Kreft Building renovation was completed just in time for the start of the school year.  We have a good start on Phase 2 which is scheduled to be completed sometime in November.   Phase 2 involves renovating an additional 7 classrooms.  The 4th and final phase will be completed next summer

Dan Feller and Amie Studer are seeking re-election to the Board of Education.  Both are running unopposed.  The School Board election is scheduled for September 9.

Again this year, Frontier Savings Bank conducted a school supply drive.  School supplies were donated to the Lewis Central and Council Bluffs School Districts.  A special thanks to Gary Matters, Bank President, and Marial Wagner, Loan Operations Officer, for spear-heading this effort.

If you are a parent/guardian of a Middle School or High School student and have not signed up for Power School, we would encourage you to do so.  This will allow you to monitor your son/daughter’s attendance and grades from your computer at home.  Please check with the building principal for additional information.

The Board of Education held a work session on September 2 to revisit the Master Facilities Plan which was developed 3 years ago.  During this 3 year period, we have added a 13 classroom addition at Titan Hill, put on new roofs at the Middle School and Titan Hill, extensive parking lot improvements at Kreft, and as mentioned we are currently renovating Kreft.  These facility improvements have been financed with local option sales tax dollars.  As you probably know the local option sales tax has now been implemented statewide until 2029.  These monies can be used for infrastructure needs and property tax relief.  Although after the Kreft renovation, all of our buildings which currently house students will have been completed renovated, we have still facility issues that need to be addressed.  We have areas within the High School that are not air conditioned.  What are we going to do with the unoccupied Central Elementary?  We need a larger concession building at the football field.  We still have to replace part of the roof on the Middle School.  The ERC needs renovated.  We have had discussions around the need for an alternative setting for High School students.  Because of enrollment increases across all grade levels, classroom space is once again becoming an issue.  In the ensuing months, the Board of Education and the Administration will be revising the Master Facilities Plan.
