Academic Bus Information

Academic Bus services are continuing in 2008-09! The Academic Bus is used to provide transportation to students who are engaged in school work after school hours for academic reasons (NOT disciplinary reasons). Last year, nearly 2,000 student riders were served - that equates to almost 1200 hours of instructional time that students received last year AFTER school!
The Academic Bus runs at 3:30 P.M. and has service to all neighborhoods. The dropoff points are NOT exactly matched to normal bus routes, but are close. For details on precisely where the dropoff points are, please contact Cindy or Steve at the Transportation Office at 366-8202.
Students are REQUIRED to have a copy of the Academic Bus Waiver Form on file prior to accessing this service. Forms may be downloaded here and turned in at the Middle School office after being completed and signed by a parent/guardian.

The attached letter describes the procedures that the district will use for dropping off students who stay after school for academic purposes. Again, the service is strictly to serve our students' academic needs in an expanded way. These services are in no way to be used for students who are assigned after school time as a disciplinary action!
To that end, please sign and return the attached permission sheet with your son/daughter. Even if you think he/she would never be in need of such an intervention, I would ask that you consider that we cannot predict all the possible scenarios that would necessitate the use of this Academic Bus transportation opportunity...
You are NOT signing away your only notification. Our procedures dictate that the teachers and/or student secure parent knowledge via a phone call on the day that they will be staying for additional academic services before the student is added to the Academic Bus list.
The intent of this service is to provide an academic intervention for students who need additional time with teachers to complete work, gain additional instruction in a smaller setting, make up missed work from illnesses, and otherwise have access to academic support they need to succeed. At the same time, we recognize their reliance on our transportation system to get home at night. This is the reason we have asked for this expenditure by the board. We are delighted they continue to provide our students with this opportunity!
