Randy Shanks of Shanks Law Firm takes questions from 6th graders about the legal issues in the novel "The Outsiders".

Johnny is Innocent!

By Ron Frascht

May 22, 2008

Mr. Frascht's 6th grade Literacy classes transformed their classroom into a courtroom and the resounding verdict was that the character Johnny from The Outsiders is innocent.  The students had many roles in this class project.  We had a judge, two lawyers for the prosecution, and two lawyers for the defense in each class.  The rest of the class was the jury.  The students had to prepare opening and closing arguments.  After they put their case before the court they left the classroom and the jury deliberated on the verdict they would deliver.  It was so much fun to watch the students come up with creative and persuasive ways to prove their arguments.  The jury was great at debating the points made by the lawyers and coming up with a well thought out verdict.  It was a wonderful project that the students did spectacular on.

A special "Thank You" Randy Shanks of Shanks Law Firm for coming in and speaking with the students on the merits of a career in law.  He did an amazing job answering questions directed at this field of work.  The students were entranced as he regaled them with anecdotes from his trials and informed them of the steps that are involved in making this a career choice.  He also discussed with them their performances.  He offered amazing insights into how their arguments could have been tweaked to be even more persuasive.  Randy also was very generous in his compliments to the group on what a great job they had done on this project.  We feel very fortunate that we have such benevolent individuals in the community who will donate their time to furthering learning opportunities for kids.  Mr. Frascht is very proud of this project and wishes to thank all of his students for making it an amazing success.
