Marcos Perez took home Most Valuable Player honors for the Large Schools squad in Sunday's The Daily Nonpareil/Iowa Western Community College Southwest Iowa Classic XII.

Perez, a first team all-city selection, downplayed his 10-point, eight rebound, five assist performance at Kanesville Arena.

"MVP? I didn't think I was gonna win it because I didn't do much," Perez said. "But I (did) get one dunk."

The one dunk was quite a sight. Perez faked a shot, drove the baseline and rose for the dunk. He succeeded after a couple of failed alley-oop attempts with Large Schools teammate and Thomas Jefferson guard Ryan Peckham.

He showed his versatility with several timely rebounds. He also regularly demonstrated his smooth passing skills to set his teammates up with easy baskets, helping guide the Large Schools to a victory over the Small Schools.

Perez was a big reason for Lewis Central's 21-win campaign this past season. He plans on continuing his playing career in college; he's just unsure where he'll be this fall.

"There are a couple of colleges," Perez said. "We're going to see who can (help) pay the most for school."

In his four years at L.C. Perez has made a number of fond memories.

"Playing at the Tyson Arena (in Sioux City) and at the Mid-America Center," he said. "But most of all, having fun at practice with my coaches and teammates."
