Technology Literacy Philosophy

Lewis Central CSD’s K-12 technology curriculum fosters an integrated system of learning through deep understanding of technology literacy concepts in order to compete in an ever changing world. Students are empowered to become evolving digital citizens with a sense of global responsibility.


Technology Literacy Defined:

  • In the 2014 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Technology and Engineering Literacy framework, they define technology as "any modification of the natural world done to fulfill human needs or desires."

  • Technology literacy is the ability of an individual, working independently and with others, to responsibly, appropriately and effectively locate and use technology tools to collaborate, create, communicate, and think critically.


Enduring Understandings - Students understand that:

  1. technology, as a resource, can provide a means for effective communication and collaboration with multiple audiences.

  2. technology, as a resource, can provide a means for problem solving, creating and adding value to products and services.

  3. technology impacts individuals and society.

  4. appropriate tool selection relies on current knowledge of the functions, operations of, and inter-connectedness among hardware and software systems.


Essential Questions

  1. Why use technology to communicate with, or create products for, multiple audiences?

  2. What are the implications around being personally responsible for your behavior in the digital world?

  3. How can technology be used to impact the quality of a product?

  4. How does technology impact us?

  5. Why is it important for you to understand the functions, operations of, and inter-connectedness among hardware and software systems?

  6. Why is learning about our digital world a continuous process?

  7. How would you use technology to collaborate, create, communicate, and think critically to problem solve and make informed decisions?
