Policy 100 - Educational Philosophy of the School District

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

As a school corporation of Iowa, the Lewis Central Community School District, acting through its Board of Directors, is dedicated to promoting an equal opportunity for a quality public education to its students by maximizing all opportunities within the school district's ability and the community's willingness to furnish financial support.

To provide equity for all people, it is the policy of the Lewis Central Community School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, national origin, creed, age, religion, marital status, or disability in its educational program, activities, or employment policies as required by Title VI and VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments and the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

The district strives to provide for students in cooperation with their parents the opportunity to develop cognitive, emotional/social, and physical skills in a learning environment that provides guidance and encourages critical thinking.

Instruction, curriculum and assessment are the key elements of a public education. Critical, creative thinking and problem solving skills that will assist the students' comprehensive preparation for life shall be instructed as part of a sequentially coordinated curriculum. The district encourages students to achieve individual excellence, strives to prepare students for continuing education, employment, citizenship, and endeavors to discover and promote students' creative talents.

The role of the professional educator in this process is to motivate, inspire, and direct students to sources of information. With this in mind, Lewis Central is committed to providing competent, professionally trained teachers who recognize the dignity and worth of every person and who know that each individual has potential that should be encouraged. Each student's efforts and achievements should be assessed according to district’s standards in order to facilitate educational experiences that are conducive to continuous educational growth.

The support and involvement of the home and the community are essential to achieve educational excellence in the district. The district strives to maintain an active relationship with the home and the community to create within the students an awareness of the dignity and worth of the individual, civic responsibility, and respect for authority.
