MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2011
Un-Official Minutes
Call to Order: Board President Dorene Scheffel called the regular meeting to order at 5:30 pm. At roll call, the following board members responded as present: Mr. Feller, Mr. Hendrix, Mr. Stazzoni, Mrs. Studer, and Mrs. Scheffel. Mr. Livingston and Mr. Weilage were absent.
Administrators: Administrators present were Dr. Mark Schweer, Dave Black, Dale Kreher, and Jeff Carper
Guest in attendance: Dennis Friend, Dean Harrifield and Mary Langille
Approve Agenda: Mr. Hendrix moved, seconded by Mr. Feller, that the agenda be approved as presented.
Discussion: Discussion Item 7.02 is tabled. Carried: 5-0
Commendations/Good News:
- Dr. Schweer read an email from Tony Benidictus who was injured during a basketball game at the Mid- America Center thanking Mike Hale and Andy Walters for going above and beyond to assist him.
- Dave Black reported on the recent successes of the Speech Team.
Comments & Suggestions:
Consent Agenda: Mr. Hendrix moved, seconded by Mr. Stazzoni, that the Consent Agenda be approved as presented. Discussion: Consent Agenda included: Approval of Minutes from the January 17, 2011 meeting and the January 24, 2011 Work Session. Administrative Recommendations included: Classified Approval to Employ: James Grigg – KR custodian, Marshall Wilber – TH custodian, Travis McAlexander – TH custodian. Licensed Resignations: Ryan Osborn – HS Asst girls soccer, Jill Heller – MS 8th Grade Head Volleyball coach.

Reports
Dean Harrifield, Food Service Director presented to the Board a Mid-Year Report that dealt with the current financial status of the Food Service Department, current opportunities for lunch programs, and a summary of the Federal Child Nutrition Law and how it will affect Lewis Central.
Discussion Items
7.01 2nd Reading of Several Policies
There were no recommended changes during the 1st reading of the following policies: #901.1 School Facilities Surveys, #901.2 Site Specifications, #901.3 Site Acquisition, #901.7 Financing Sites and Construction, #902.3 Emergency Repairs, #902.4 Use of Contract, #902.7 Long Range Planning, #902.8 Asbestos Containing Materials, #902.9 Buildings and Grounds Security and #902.10 Adaption for the Handicapped. For policies #901.4 Educational Specifications for Buildings & #901.5 Preliminary Building Specifications, since they are very similar, #901.5 will be deleted. #902.1 Preventative Maintenance Schedule, an additional sentence involving graffiti was added. #902.2 Request for Improvements, additional clarification was added. #902.5 Disposition of Obsolete Equipment, additional language from the IASB template was added. #902.11 Means of Escape from Fire was renamed and expanded to Warning System and Emergency Plans.

Mr. Hendrix moved, seconded by Mr. Feller, that the Lewis Central Board of Directors adopt the above referenced policies on 2nd reading. Discussion: None Carried: 5-0

Early Start Calendar Hearing
- The Public Hearing opened at 6:35 pm. According to Iowa Code, schools cannot begin prior to August 25. Dr. Schweer along with the Administrative Team is recommending that classes begin on Thursday, August 17th for the 2011/12 school year. The first day back to school after the Christmas break is Wednesday January 4th. The Board recommended starting back on Tuesday January 3rd rather than Wednesday, January 4th. Dr Schweer will discuss this change with the Administrative Team. The calendar will be presented to the Board at the February 21stth meeting for approval. The Public Hearing closed at 6:42 pm.
Adjournment
With no further business before them, at 6:45 pm Mr. Hendrix motioned to adjourn the meeting with Mr. Feller seconding. By voice vote, all were in favor.
